Biography

Tory Smith is a figurative sculptor based in the Philadelphia area. She works chiefly in ceramics.  Her work focuses on the human figure using a variety of clay bodies, finishes, and firing techniques to explore the infinite qualities of human expression.

As part of her quest to foster growth and change, she is currently working on Project 77, a self-directed creation which she started about one year ago. This project aims to complete 77 figures, all of which begin with a twisted column of clay.

She is an active participant in the Cheltenham Center for the Arts. Her concurrent roles as a member, instructor, and kiln tech (gas and electric-fired kilns) inform and enhance her process of artmaking.  She values a collegial, cooperative environment.
