"The Italianate Brother comes from this column of clay. Instead of putting his face on a flat plane, I put his nose in the center of his face, one of the vertical angles.
What makes him Italian is he has a bit of a Roman nose. The shape of his nose, the bridge especially, gives him that character.
I was in Italy in '22, and I brought home some cones from those gigantic cypress trees. They explode outward in all three directions at once—there's no louver action like our pine cones."
I was fascinated with those cones. I've used them for a lot of different texture-making, and they were perfect for the hair."
